I was very happy to receive a copy of the DynaBrass’ latest effort, “20/20 Polkas” on ToPoMo Records. I have been following the progress of the recording and mixing sessions via Facebook and was, I’m sure along with so many others, looking forward to its release. I waited until that evening and popped the disc in to listen to it in its entirety. The first comment I must make before I get to anything else is that the sound quality and production of this album are stellar! Recorded at Peppermint Productions in Youngstown, OH by the legendary Gary Rhamy, one would expect nothing less and this recording is certainly no exception!
“20/20 Polkas” starts out strong and stays that way. Plus, you HAVE to love an album that immediately begins with a party! That’s precisely what happens here with four slammers right off the top.
We begin with “The Girls Just Wanna Dance”, written by Joe Zalewski along with Kevin Adams and it paints a very accurate picture of the party atmosphere of many modern polka dances. In this one, the girls are in front of the band and the guys are holding up the bar and the image of it made me smile. Not a bad way to hear an album for the first time, right?! We finish up with an excellent concertina solo by Jack Beachly III. Next up, it’s time to “Paint the Town” and the party continues! This is a very nicely done cover of a Jim Devine tune and a great polka rendition of modern Irish country. The song is very catchy, features a fantastic saxophone duet by Jim Mackiewicz Jr., and concludes with some smooth modulations. “Nothing but Trouble” follows. This one’s from the pens of Zalewski/Costa and kicks off with a really powerful and cool horn riff. Some minor chords are sprinkled in during the vocal and the progression flows smoothly. For a song about a dysfunctional relationship, this may be the HAPPIEST one I’ve heard on the subject to date. Kudos! “My Annie” makes a call and gives us the first traditional, Polish song of the disc. Being very familiar with Toledo Polkamotion’s unreleased version with Dave Kish on the vocal, I was happy for it to be included here. This rendition is a very faithful nod to the original and the song is just delightful!
We change tempo now with a very beautiful waltz called “Journey of Love”, written by Joe and Aaron Zalewski and Ted Lange. Done in a slightly up-tempo 3/4 meter, the melody and the synthesizer parts draw me in. Every album has to have a love song and this one would be PERFECT for a bride and groom‘s first dance at a Polish wedding! Next, we hear a Dan Bizon arrangement of Even Stevens/Hillary Kanter’s “Someday, You’ll Love Me”, originally recorded by Conway Twitty in 1991. Hearing this done in polka tempo made my mind wander to the doo-wop era. A nice inclusion! Chris Hedrich steps up to the microphone for the first of two vocal appearances on “20/20 Polkas.” I must admit, my heart went out to him as he sang of the perils of overindulgence and the usual, accompanying unpleasantness. I found myself nodding my head listening to “The Hangover” (Cox/Kelly). After recovering, we go “Walking on the Waves”. This is a tune penned by MacPhail and Robertson of Scottish origin and is another excellent crossover track on the album. It could almost be “polka yacht rock’. Wait, is that a thing? Just the same as having the obligatory love song, no polka album would be complete without an instrumental. We get that fix and more with “Moscow Mule,” written by Jim Mackiewicz Jr. and Aaron Zalewski. It features the usual, fantastic clarinet work and lots of nice solos to give it a very ethnic sound. Visions of Tetris and Zelda danced in my head in a very cool way!
Next up, we have another tempo change to oberek 6/8 meter and are greeted with and old Buck Owens, number one classic, “Who’s Gonna Mow Your Grass.” It’s back to party time and traditional Polish with “Every Day at My Place,” arranged by Mark Trzepacz. This one starts right on a vocal and takes me off to thoughts of previous generations. Bluegrass music makes an appearance with the inclusion of Tim Goins’ “One Step, Two Step” in which we hear the story of Ima Jean, a very uninhibited lady who loves to dress to the nines and dance to her heart’s content. The Paisley penned “Alcohol” follows in a waltz tempo. Oh, those perils of overindulgence come back again! There’s lots of humor in this song and I think many of us can agree we’ve “been there’. “20/20 Polkas” concludes in a very traditional manner with another nice Trzepacz arrangement, “Play Me Some Music.” Another solid concertina solo follows and the album ends with the tried and true “In Heaven, There Is No Beer.” At first, I found myself questioning why a song that has been recorded by so many different artists would be included on a new album. It works, though and along with some alternate lyrics on the second verse, I have to say it is nice to have an updated version in my arsenal.
“20/20 Polkas” HITS THE MARK and features fine musicianship and vocals throughout by AJ Zalewski, Bob Naessens, Chase Mackiewicz, Chris Hedrich, Dale Kivinen, Jack Beachly III, Jim Mackiewicz Jr., and Joe Zalewski. Popping artwork design and graphics by Michelle Eron, and stunning photography by Les Kapuscinski. It is an album I know I’ll be going back to on a regular basis and I hope it will be a MUST for your collection!
